Lamont Peterson vs. Amir Khan rematch set for May 19 in Las Vegas

Saturday, March 3, 2012

Washington D.C. boxing sensation Lamont Peterson has finally granted Amir Khan's request for a rematch on May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.
Khan and Peterson fought to a split decision in favor of the Washington, DC native last December which made Peterson the new unified WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion.
Although Peterson was knocked down by Khan in the first round, the former WBO light welterweight titleholder managed to survive the relentless assault by the British star.
The decision drew criticism from Khan's camp as the referee deducted two points from Khan for pushing. The fight could have been decided by the judges in favor of Khan if it were not for the point deductions.
Peterson was one of the four shortlisted challengers of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, who is now facing Timothy Bradley on June 9 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
Last year, Peterson fought former Mayweather foe Victor Ortiz to a draw and later faced Victor Cayo for an impressive KO win before facing Khan.
Peterson said he is happy with the rematch as well as the venue of the fight, saying Las Vegas is a neutral site which should stopped Khan from complaining about a hometown decision.
I'm delighted that I have finally been given the chance to avenge the result of my last fight," said Khan (26-2, 18 KO's). "It's clear I wasn't happy with what went on in the previous fight, but that takes nothing away from how Lamont Peterson fought. He showed tremendous heart that night, but now I have the chance to prove once and for all that I'm the very best in the division. I'm going to take care of business inside the ring and this fight is going to be just as exciting as the last one. The only difference is going to be in the outcome."
Golden Boy Promotions' Richard Schaefer, who promotes Khan's fights said the rematch will be a treat to fight fans who want to see the fighters in a neutral ground.

"I said before their first fight that this was an opportunity to see the two best super lightweights in the world compete at the highest level of the sport and neither Amir Khan or Lamont Peterson disappointed the fans," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "To see them fight again so soon after their first match on neutral ground in Las Vegas is a treat for boxing fans around the world."
Barry Hunter, manager and trainer of Lamont Peterson said the rematch is the best available option for Peterson at this time.
"We are pleased with the decision to fight Khan for the second time," said Barry Hunter, manager and trainer of Lamont Peterson. "I was extremely proud of Lamont with respect to this process. He took his time and looked at all of his options and he decided this was the best option available. Our preparation for this fight will be the same, it is going to be a hard fight and we will be ready for the challenge."
The rematch will be available on HBO live telecast.
