September 11 Obama's Comments

Sunday, September 11, 2011

President Barack Obama commemorated Sunday’s 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in his weekly address Saturday, urging the nation to come together and remember those who lost their lives.
“We’re remembering the lives we lost—nearly 3,000 innocent men, women and children. We’re reaffirming our commitment to always keep faith with their families,” he said.

As the nation honors the heroes and victims of 9/11 this weekend, the president encouraged Americans to also look forward to a brighter future for the country.
“America is stronger and Al Qaeda is on the path to defeat,” Obama said, noting that the weakening of the terrorist group was apparent in the killing of Osama bin Laden.
“A decade after 9/11, it’s clear for all the world to see — the terrorists who attacked us that September morning are no match for the character of our people, the resilience of our nation, or the endurance of our values,” he said.
Obama cautioned that the country is not free from the possibility of another attack, and highlighted the importance of remaining vigilant.
America is beginning to turn its focus to nation-building at home, Obama said.
“We are Americans, and we are stronger and safer when we stay true to the values, freedoms and diversity that make us unique among nations,” he said. “A decade later, we’ve shown that America doesn’t hunker down and hide behind walls of mistrust.”
On Sunday, the president and First Lady Michelle Obama will mark the anniversary of 9/11 by visiting the grounds of the World Trade Center in New York City, the site where Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Penn., as well as the Pentagon. Later, the first couple will also attend “A Concert for Hope” at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
