The International Day of Peace was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1981 to commemorate the annual opening of the General Assembly. In 2002, the date of September 21 was fixed as the permanent date

In 2002, the date of September 21 was fixed as the permanent date.The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Peace used to celebrate on September 21 each year to recognize the efforts of those who worked hard to end conflict and promote peace.The International Day of Peace, observed each year on September 21, is a global call for non violence.. It has grown to include millions of people in all parts of the world, and each year events are organized to commemorate and celebrate this day.Anyone, anywhere could be able to celebrate Peace Day. It could be as simple as lighting a candle at noon, or just sitting in silent meditation.At United Nations Headquarters in New York, International Day of Peace is marked each year with a special ceremony near the Peace Bell.May we therefore demolish hateful thoughts and show nothing but love to our fellow men.
On Sunday night at 5:30 PM local Peace Corps alumni will celebrate that organization’s 50th anniversary at the Gray Eagle in the River Arts District.  On the same day faith leaders will provide a service for remembrance and prayer at First Baptist Church at 6 PM.

Greendrinks on Wednesday, September 14 will feature panelists who are working on International Day of Peace at 5:30 PM at Posana’s on the corner of Patton Avenue and Broadway.  They will stress how the nonviolence and peace intersects with issues environmentalists, healthcare and social and economic justice advocates work on, and why it’s important that groups work with each other.

Media sponsors include 880 The Revolution and Rapid River Magazine.  On a Roll T-Shirts will provide t-shirts for volunteers, and will have for sale others with Peacetown’s popular logo.
