Martin Luther King Jr. Day events will be held throughout Portland in the next few days

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and there’s much to do throughout Portland in the next several days to honor his legacy.

Southeast Portland
On Friday, Jan. 13, volunteers are needed at Kateri Park, 3640 S.E. 28th Ave., to help with a children’s art class.
On Monday, Jan. 16, volunteers will converge on Earl Boyles Elementary School, 10822 S.E. Bush St., to clean, weed and remove plants in the courtyard. For more information, call 503-200-3355.
The Clark Center, 1437 S.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., is looking for volunteers to help make a meal for residents on Tuesday, Jan 17, at its 90-bed transitional housing shelter for men. For details, call 503-200-3355.
On Monday, Jan. 16, Portland Parks & Recreation has added extra sessions at three Southeast Portland pools. The extra session at Buckman Pool will be from 1 to 5 p.m. The additional swim time at Mt. Scott Community Center will be in the leisure pool only, from 1 to 8:30 p.m. The leisure pool at the East Portland Community Pool will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for family swim, plus 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. for open play swim.
Northeast
The Skanner Foundation's 26th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast will be held Monday, Jan. 16 at the Oregon Convention Center. Call 503-285-5555 for info.
The World Arts Foundation will host its 27th annual tribute on Monday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. at the Highland Christian Center, 7600 N.E. Glisan St. Bring a $5 donation nonperishable food for a food pantry.
The Northeast Portland Backpack Lunch Program is hosting a sacking event from 1-3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16 at the Woodlawn United Methodist Church, at Northeast 15th Avenue and Dekum Street. Call Marilyn for more info on what food to donate: 503-287-3014.
The King School PTA is hosting a volunteer service day and work party from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, to fight invasive species, clean up the grounds and plant a native habitat at the school, Northeast Seventh Avenue and Wygant Street. Contact Diego at 808-779-3435.
Hacienda Community Development Corp. is hosting two events on Friday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. One is a Cully neighborhood cleanup and the other is a garden party. Both events are included in the Hands on Greater Portland and United Way roster of service events.
On Monday, Jan. 16, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., volunteers will plant 160 trees along the I-205 Multi-Use Path near the Parkrose/Sumner Transit Center, 9481 N.E. Sandy. Details: AndyM@FriendsofTrees.org or JennyB@FriendsofTrees.org.
A morale booster for the Occupy Wall Street movement in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be Monday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alberta Rose Theatre, 3000 N.E. Alberta St. All ages welcome. www.albertarosetheatre.com or 503-719-6055.

Volunteers will gather at 10 a.m. Friday at The ReBuilding Center of Our United Villages, 3625 N. Mississippi Ave. to kickoff the Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend of Service.

Northwest

Sisters of the Road is organizing a march Monday, Jan. 16 that will also highlight the work of Right 2 Dream Too, a "rest area" for the homeless located under the Chinatown gate. Participants will gather at 11:30 a.m. at Sisters of the Road, 133 N.W. Sixth Ave.

Southwest
Volunteers are needed to pull ivy and other invasive plants at Tryon Creek State Park between 9 a.m. and noon Monday, Jan. 16. Details: Sarah Kreisman at sarah@tryonfriends.org.
Extra time Monday, Jan. 16, at the Southwest Community Center Pool, 6820 S.W. 45th Ave., will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at both pools, 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the leisure pool and 7:30 to 9 p.m. at both pools.

This year's theme of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is "Bridging the Gap Between Sustainability and Social Justice." Included are keynote speaker Jo Ann Hardesty -- radio co-host of "Voices From the Edge" on KBOO -- workshops and activities. A local, sustainable lunch menu will be served by Chef Peter Leigh Gallin.
