iPhone 5 is coming with Wider Screen

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Yet more widescreen iPhone 5 rumors have hit the web this morning, with a whisper that at least one of Apple's multiple iPhone 5 prototypes boasts a 3.9 inch touchscreen with a 1136 x 640 resolution. This by way of 9to5Mac which claims two of the larger-screen devices are code-named N41AP (5,1) and N42AP (5,2), and would have an aspect ratio around 16:9 to accommodate widescreen videos. Supposedly iOS 6, expected to make its debut at WWDC this June, will be fully optimized to make use of the additional screen real estate. For example, they claim we can expect an extra row of icons on the home screen, as illustrated in many mock-ups. 9to5Mac also claims the iPhone 5 will have a smaller size micro dock connector port, a rumor first published by iMore by in February.

iMore has also been told Apple is keeping the Home button, which means an extra long screen can't occupy the same space as that button. So, either the front would have to be moved around to accommodate it, the entire phone would have to be lengthened, or both.
Check out when is iphone 5 coming out
We've already commented at length about a 4-inch iPhone 5, and there are a lot of reasons that make such a change reasonable. Android devices have been ballooning in size over the last year or two, while Apple has kept the iPhone at its original 3.5 inch screen size. Personally, I welcome the extra area, particularly if it's maintaining the same Retina sharpness that we've grown accustomed to since the iPhone 4. I have no doubts that Apple will at the very least maintain its current battery life levels, but that may be a steep challenge if the iPhone 5 comes with a hotter processor as well as a bigger screen. What I worry most about is estranging iOS app developers with increased fragmentation. Given Apple went a long time at the same screen ratio, we've already seen many devs skip optimization for the new iPad's Retina display; would Apple really change the aspect ratio further complicate the lives of app-makers, or do they have much of a choice?
when is iphone 5 coming out

If Apple does go to close to 4 inches with the iPhone, would you prefer a wider screen, 16:9 aspect ratio, or the same 2:3 aspect ration simply stretched larger?

iPhone 5 Release Date, iPad Mini And New MacBook Pro: This Week In Apple Rumors

Monday, May 21, 2012

iPhone 5 Release Date: READERS: I hope you like iPhone 5 rumors, because there were a whole lot of them this week -- some of them even coming from reputable sources that you might be able to trust! Can you believe it? Up is down, down is up! Cats and dogs living together...mass hysteria!
iPhone 5 Release Date
Let's start at the Wall Street Journal, a publication that Apple loves with all its heart and has been giving inside access to lately. Here's the paper, citing "people with familiar with the matter":

That bigger iPhone is expected to land some time in the fall, according to the Wall Street Journal's sources.

Now, the Wall Street Journal isn't exactly filled with hacks, but let's fact-check the Murdoch-owned paper on its past Apple rumors anyway: In February 2011, the WSJ claimed Apple was working on a "less-pricey" iPhone for emerging markets; that one still hasn't emerged.

iPhone 5 Release Date

Otherwise, the Journal has been solid on Apple rumors: It was correct in predicting an early 2012 launch for a new iPad with a Retina display screen; it was mostly correct in its report of an impending Verizon iPhone back in 2010 (missed the release date by a couple months); it was one of few publications to correctly predict that Apple would not change the design of the iPhone 4 for the iPhone 4S; and it also broke the news that Sprint would begin selling the iPhone starting with the iPhone 4S this past October.

In other words, it is more trustworthy than, say, Digitimes. Or James O'Keefe.

But the Journal wasn't the only creditable publication with trustworthy sources whispering to it about the next iPhone. Within hours of the WSJ's report, we got another iPhone 5 rumor from Reuters, which said...

Wikipedia Blackout: Jimmy Wales Announces Protest Of SOPA, PIPA On January 18

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Wikipedia has issued an official statement confirming a planned blackout on January 18. Scroll down for update.

Wikipedia has apparently joined the ranks of several high-profile websites that are planning a "blackout" on Wednesday, January 18, in protest of Congress' proposed anti-piracy legislation. During the blackout period, many web pages will become unavailable and will likely be replaced with information about the protest.

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales took to Twitter on Monday to announce that the English-language version of Wikipedia will go dark on Wednesday for 24 hours -- from midnight EST on January 18 until midnight EST January 19. He noted in a later tweet that "Final details [are] under consideration but consensus seems to be for 'full' rather than 'soft' blackout!"

Wednesday's so-called SOPA Strike was initially proposed by Reddit, which will go dark for 12 hours to protest H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), and S. 968, the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). These bills are designed to punish primarily foreign-based websites found to violate or facilitate violations of U.S. copyrights. Backlash against the bills has been strong, particularly among the online community. Google, eBay, Mozilla, Twitter, Facebook, Huffington Post parent company Aol and other web giants have formally opposed the bills. The popular Cheezburger Network has joined Reddit in committing to a blackout-protest on January 18, as has news blog Boing Boing and several other prominent sites. Community classified ads site Craigslist has also come out recently against the bills but has not officially stated that it will participate in the blackout.

According a tweet posted by @Jimmy_Wales, Jimmy Wales' official Twitter handle, Wikipedia is planning for its January 18 blackout to affect only en.Wikipedia.org, though, the tweet continued, "the Germans will run a banner, and other languages will make their own decisions."

A representative for Wikipedia was not immediately available for comment.

On January 14, the White House published a letter voicing concerns about SOPA and PIPA. The letter also stated and that, moving forward, the Obama Administration will work with both opponents and proponents of stopping copyright violations online to pass effective legislation in 2012.

On January 13, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Virginia) said SOPA will not reach the House floor until its perceived flaws are addressed. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) told MSNBC on Sunday that the Senate will move forward with PIPA in the coming weeks.

Wales has been considering a Wikipedia protest of SOPA since December, when he asked users via his Wiki "talk page" whether the Wikipedia community would support a global blank-out of English-language Wiki pages.

In October, the Italian Wikipedia staged a protest of the Parliament's so-called "Wiretapping Bill" by taking down all Italian-language encyclopedia entries and replacing them with message about the controversial law. It.Wikipedia.org is Wikipedia's fifth-largest network, with more than 881,000 articles.

The English Wikipedia, with its nearly 3,850,000 articles, is Wikipedia's largest Encyclopedia. Jimmy Wales tweeted a comScore estimate that each day 25 million visitors from around the world access English-language Wikipedia pages.

Steve Wozniak Waiting In Line For iPhone 4S

Friday, October 14, 2011

Nice to see Steve Wozniak being a true blue gentleman, waiting in line patiently just like everyone else for the iPhone 4S before it is released to the masses. Woz’s Twitter account placed him first in line at the Los Gatos Apple Store, where he tweeted, “The long wait begins. I’m first in line. The guy ahead was on the wrong side and he’s pissed.” I guess it always pays to be aware of the surroundings before you plant your rear end and lay claim to pole position – which might not be in the place that you’d like. Woz took his Segway there, and he’s obviously keeping himself occupied with a white iPad 2 in tow.
